TABLE MOUNTAIN RESERVE TABLE MOUNTAIN November 12, 2012 Home Trail/Park Description: Table Mountain is a flat volcanic plateau of about six square miles five miles north of the town of Oroville, California. It's the remains of a 40 million year old lava flow that covered much of the states north east section and extended almost to the Bay Area. Much of the top of the plateau seems like barren grasslands interspersed with rocky volcanic protrusions. On closer inspection the rocks are mostly lichen or spike-moss covered, and the grassy areas turn into verdant fields of wildflowers in the spring. More details here . We took this hike in late fall and yet still saw a variety of trees, plants and birds while hiking this amazing landscape. For those anticipating a visit, Oroville is only about two hours from the Bay Area, and it's more than just a pit stop for gas or a quick bite. Once away from the freeway, Oroville's old section is quite charming as well as having a number of parks and museums. Park Location: here Topo Map: here Trail Map: here Park link: here
